Council sign-off required an engineer\u2019s <strong>certificate<\/strong>, bushfire planning, and a safe <strong>wastewater<\/strong> design.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t rebellious; it was <strong>responsible<\/strong>,\u201d Liam says. \u201cWe followed the rules and showed that <strong>different<\/strong> can still be <strong>safe<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>Lessons they learned the hard way<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t romanticise the <strong>rust<\/strong>,\u201d Emma laughs. \u201cSteel moves with <strong>heat<\/strong> and <strong>cold<\/strong>.\u201d They over-engineered door frames, sealed every <strong>penetration<\/strong>, and allowed for condensation before it became a <strong>mould<\/strong> story.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>If they were starting again, they\u2019d pre-plan every <strong>penetration<\/strong>, install more roof <strong>overhang<\/strong>, and budget for triple the <strong>sealant<\/strong>. \u201cWater will find the smallest <strong>lie<\/strong> you tell,\u201d Liam says.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul><\/p>\n<li>Key upgrades that made it work: thick natural-fibre insulation, a ventilated roof <strong>cap<\/strong>, shaded glazing on the west, a small but efficient <strong>battery<\/strong> bank, and built-in furniture that hugs the <strong>curve<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<p>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>Why they won\u2019t go back<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Freedom isn\u2019t only the absence of <strong>rent<\/strong>; it\u2019s the presence of <strong>time<\/strong>. Weekends became garden <strong>hours<\/strong>, bike rides to the <strong>river<\/strong>, and slow dinners under a sky that refuses to be <strong>rented<\/strong>.
